We are Charlie and Melissa Hodge. We have 2 young children: Layla (7) and Baer (4 1/2). This August, we closed on a 2001 42 Classic (Hull # 1461) and renamed her Promises. Chuck Meyers, over at Jarrett Bay, was extremely instrumental in getting our prior boat sold (very quickly and at a strong price), so we could step-up into our new boat. Although I wish we had a full season to cruise the new boat, we really enjoyed spending August and September getting some short cruises under our belt. We need to spend some time getting to know the boat and gaining more confidence as a cruising family. My primary rule of thumb is to take it slow and easy and avoid windy days on the bay. The goal is to get the kids to love boating, as well as my wife.
We keep our boat in the inner harbor at the Baltimore Marine Center and we live in Monkton, Maryland. My wife has no prior boating experience, other than what I have introduced her to. As a kid, I lived on the water 7 days a week. I grew up in sailing camp, racing small boats on Long Island Sound during the week. On weekends, we went cruising in my parents’ Tarten 30 sailboat. We always had a small whaler for getting to camp, go inner-tubing behind, or early morning blue - fishing. So far my wife has taken to my boating obsession fairly well. It should come as no surprise that the new boat definitely helps make it more enjoyable and comfortable. I am involved in buying residential mortgages for our own portfolio that we service and my wife is a 1st grade teacher at Boys Latin School.
