Grand Banks Owners Rendezvous

2005 Fall Rendezvous - September 28 - October 1, 2005

This year's Rendezvous was attended by thirty five boats 20 of which arrived at the Oxford Yacht Agency by Wednesday September 28th for the welcome cocktail party hosted by Lynn Hendershot (Revenir Eastbay 38-97). The arriving boats were met by a talented dock crew of: Bob Taylor (Pelican GB32-765, Bob Jordan (Arietta Eastbay 49-74, and Bruce Krause (Tortuga GB32-375). Geoff Holmes our maximum leader (Rosetta GB42-992) was also active in the dockage scene. Joan Jordan welcomed every boat and presented the welcome packets which included a beautiful book of aerial pictures of Chesapeake Bay harbors, and a gorgeous Mums plant. Everyone went to bed that night knowing that a strong front was coming in so the captains meeting for the predicted log to Gibson Island was called for 6:30am.

Thursday morning early our president Geoff Holmes, for weather reasons, called the predicted log off and arranged for a bus (yes a bus) to take our group to Gibson Island Yacht Club for the evening reception. Bob Taylor a NOAA retiree arranged a short notice visitation to the NOAA Fisheries Lab in Oxford which was quite interesting. To his credit newly promoted Rear Admiral Buz Buzby piloted (Jerry Land Alaskan 46-28) oer the storm tossed bay to Gibson Island and was there, along with Tony Izo (Marangi EB49-74) to greet the land yacht carrying the rest of us. The reception at Gibson Island Yacht Club was great with a fantastic venue, great food and dancing.

Friday the fleet got underway for a "modified predicted log, with the mysterious modifications explained later by the sometimes mysterious John Shanahan himself. The trip up the bay was made under a beautiful bright sparkly day with a very slight northerly breeze. Docking at Inner Harbor East with their individual slip floating docks was a piece of cake. The weather was just beautiful and the view of the Baltimore harbor and skyline was spectacular. Our fleet make up this year was as follows:GB32/2, GB36/9, GB42/11, GB46/3, GB Alaskan 46/1, GB49/2, GB52/1, EB/38/2, EB43/1, EB49/3.

Saturday morning we had the annual business meeting and Geoff Holmes will return again as President. There was good discussion about: next years rendezvous, date changes to allow a trip to Solomons, possible rendezvous in the spring, mini cruises. Dick Seed led a boat problem solving session which could easily have gone on for another hour. Saturday night John Shanahan gave out the awards for the Predicted Log Event and explained them in a way that only he can do. Finally Bill Dial Contributor to The Mariner Magazine gave us a talk on pollution and Bay boat courtesy and Carol Stone read a ditty "Ode to the 42 "

There were many welcome new faces this year including Tucker West Grand Banks East Coast Marketing manager. Bill (boatless) Fink was there as factory liaison.
